Jack Pitney was the industry's wunderkind 61/2 years ago.

At age 38, he was plucked from a public relations job to launch the Mini brand in the United States. Pitney was one of the leaders of a small team of BMW managers who labored for months in their free time on marketing plans. Ultimately, they convinced skeptical American bosses that the Mini would sell in the United States. Sales have exceeded expectations.

But two years ago, BMW of North America CEO Tom Purves moved several of his top managers into new jobs - including Pitney, now 44. Pitney runs a 33-employee marketing department that's the size of Mini USA's entire …
