How Tasmania will pick its judges
Future Tasmanian judges and magistrates will be treated like most other job-seekers,having to answer an advertisement and front an appointment committee which includes non-lawyers.
It will also help if they are IT-literate, under changes to judicial appointments announcedby Attorney-General PETER PATMORE.
He says the system's been brought in to counter perceptions that judicial appointmentsare made on a nod and a wink.
While the perception is wrong, he says community attitudes demand that relations betweengovernment and the judiciary are transparent.
Dr PATMORE has already gone some way down the path, with the most recent appointmentto the Supreme Court, Justice ALAN BLOW, answering an advertisement in 2000.
